4th-6th Grade
The 4th-6th Grade Pod is for students who are roughly 9-12 years old. If your child does not fit in this group based on age, but you feel he/she would be a good fit for the classes based on your child's maturity and academic level, please contact the Pod Leader for this group and request permission to have your child enrolled.

There are four class hours offered each Monday, with a 30-minute Assembly time built into the middle of the day.
CCHC allows students to take anywhere from one to four classes each Monday. Your child does not have to enroll in all four hours of classes.

If your student is not 9-12 years old, but you would like him/her to take one or more classes in this pod, please contact the pod leader for permission to enroll your child. Remember, your child can take some classes in this pod and some classes in another. Our classes are registered for individually so you can match your child to the class that fits him/her best!

First Hour

IEW: Time Travelers-Adventures in Writing​
​Join us as we explore adventurous topics such as Roman hoplites, tornadoes, Leif Erikson, and other exciting subjects while we learn to write with the Structure and Style. Students will cover seven of the nine IEW units in this course. They will learn skills needed to organize various paper structures and to dress-up their papers with vocabulary, sentence openers, and more! This course is suitable for students at any level and can be scaled as needed.

Intro to Oceanography
​
In this class we will learn about waves and tides, shallow and deep ocean circulation, ocean basins and marine animals. This is an introductory learning class where we will explore the different aspects of the ocean together and the way it affects our world. There will be some simple group quizzes as we finish each section and a fun project towards the end of the year.

Second Hour

​Exploring Sign Language​
​This fun and engaging class will introduce your child to the foundations of Sign Language through basic vocabulary development, learning how to ask and answer basic questions, real world application and review games. Students will have the opportunity to learn at least one worship song in sign language as a group and several Bible verses in sign language. Students will learn about Deaf History, Deaf Culture and can optionally practice what they have learned in deaf events such as: interviewing a deaf missionary, or attending a deaf ministry event or deaf coffee chat).
**This course is NOT graded.
**Many resources will be provided in customized handouts and materials, but this ASL book is used for part of this class.

Art: Drawing Basics for 4-6

Please join us in a class using various mediums such as sketch pencils, acrylic paint, colored pencils, water colors.
We will be developing our drawing technique with lessons each week.
You will have fun improving your drawing skills and spending time with friends.

History with American Girl Felicity
​​
Travel back in time to 1774 with Felicity, an American girl living in colonial times. During class, we will sip tea and create period era crafts while we discuss the reading and dive into history. Students will be reading one or more chapters of the Felicity American Girl books each week. Books will be provided. Craft projects may be displayed at the Christmas program.

Kind Minds with Christina
Students will discover ways to improve their interpersonal skills by practicing self-awareness and regulation; communication and listening skills; and conflict resolution. We will spend time reflecting on ways they can show kindness, gratitude, and empathy in their everyday lives. During class sessions, skills will be taught and demonstrated through discussion, oral presentations, worksheets, and hands-on activities.

Challenge Champs​
​Get ready for a fun and high-energy physical education class full of exciting twists! We’ll play fitness games, relays, and complete challenges that will keep everyone moving and engaged. This class will build teamwork, improve strength, increase endurance and overall fitness, all while having a blast together!

Meet the Music Composers
​
Come meet some of the greatest composers of all time!
Each week we will focus on 1-2 composers from different musical periods, and also spend time listening to their works. Included each week will be a theory lesson where we will touch on important musical concepts(for ex: what makes up an orchestra, intro to reading music, names of the white keys on the piano, rhythm, and more).
*For those who took this class before, it is the same class with a few minor variations.

Book Club​
Do you enjoy reading? Come and join our Book Club class! The books we will read will be historical fiction. The semester will start out with The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. Then we will read The Star of Light by Patricia St. John and A Single Shard by Linda Sue Parks. Each class we will discuss our readings and work on a project that goes along with our books. ​
